The Bay of Islands and Paihia!
The bay of Islands is renowned for it's natural beauty, marine attractions, fishing, golf, hiking and sightseeing. Paihia is the centre of the Bay of islands attractions and many of them are within a short walking distance of the motel. From the Paihia wharf, (2 - 3 minutes walk), boats leave for tours of the islands, dolphin and whale watching, fishing as well as ferries to the historic, old capital of NZ, Russell. Take a day or a few hours to shop and enjoy the cafes of this beautiful little town or hop over the hill to a beautiful beach where you could be a hundred miles from civilisation.
If you are a fisherman, or woman, you are in fishing heaven. Due to the nature of the Bay of Islands and the amount of islands, rocks and foul ground commercial fishing boats keep well away. Also, due to the steep underwater banks and pinacles there are large upwellings that bring masses of plankton to the surface resulting in an abundance of pelagic fish and mammals. A visit to the Paihia Swordfish Club is an absolute must do for any fisherman. You will see many mounted record game fish and photographs to drool over. They also have a respectable meal each evening and every one is welcome. At the Bounty we can arrange your fishing trips, advise the best times of the year for different species and give you up to date information on the fishing. Contact us for the latest.
What about the golfer? Paihia boasts one of the best coastal golf courses in NZ. Just 5 minutes from the Bounty Motel you are in the clubrooms of the Waitangi Golf Course adjacent to the historic treaty grounds. Green fees for affiliated golfers are $45 and for non affiliated members or tourists they are $49. Bring your clubs, or borrow Keiths, and try the course, you will not regret it.
If you are in the Bay of Islands a visit to Waitangi grounds and treaty house, approx 2 kilometers from the motel, is a must do. The beautiful grounds and historic buildings are stooped in Maori and European history and you will be able to see the largest war canoe, Whaka, in the world.

In early 1980's when the "new" Bounty was designed it was decided that the construction should be "Lockwood". This style of construction uses solid NZ exotic timber interlocked without using nails. This allows the whole building to move in the event of an earthquake of major storm. It is the only Bay of Islands accommodation constructed in this manner.
One of the features of Lockwood construction is the normal daily expansion and contraction. The building is similar to an old sailing ship and the creaks and groans seem to make the building come alive.
